    Description

    Ex. Jack Swigert

Apollo Spacecraft: North American Rockwell Contractor's Model on Base, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Jack Swigert, with Period Provenance and LOA. An impressive 21" tall (overall) 1960s model on a 6.5" diameter base. Complete with engine, service module, command module, and escape tower. Printed in silver on base: "Apollo Spacecraft/ North American Rockwell"; the label on the underside of base is from W. J. Hyatt. A rare and popular model. This was a treasured possession of Apollo 13 Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert and is pictured in a newspaper article from the Rocky Mountain News dated April 10, 1970 (the day before launch). Various signs of wear with some cellophane tape damage. Overall very good with absolutely impeccable provenance. What a display piece this would make!

Included with this lot is a clipping of the original article showing this model along with a Letter of Authenticity from Swigert's niece Jeaneen Spinelli that reads, in full: "I certify that this is Jack Swigert's personally owned Apollo spacecraft model. Model is from the mid-1960s, made by North American Aviation, Inc., the company that merged with Rockwell-Standard in March 1967 shortly after the Apollo I fire. Unlike more common models made by North American Rockwell after the merger, this is one of the earliest Apollo models ever produced, and is accompanied by the 'Rocky Mountain News' showing Swigert's parents holding up the model in a story published 10 April 1970, just days before Apollo 13 launched. Swigert gave the model to his parents shortly after he was assigned to the backup crew for the Apollo 13 mission. Saturn model spacecraft is comprised of the Escape Rocket, which sits atop the Command Module, housed in a circular base that reads "North American Aviation, Inc. / APOLLO SPACECRAFT" with the NASA emblem. United States decals and flag are on the Escape Rocket and Command Module. Affixed to the underside of the base is a label by The Walter J. Hyatt Co. Model measures 6.5" in diameter and 21" tall. The model remained in Jack Swigert's estate until it was consigned to Nate D. Sanders Auctions."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
