Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Soviet Model, with COA. A superbly designed and crafted deluxe model of the Soyuz-U launch vehicle in the background, and the Soyuz 19 & Apollo CSM-111 spacecraft in orbit just before docking above the earth in the foreground. All are mounted on a four-sided sparkling green base, 6.5" x 11" x 0.5" overall, with five silver stars mounted. The rocket stands 13.75" tall and the "orbit" is 14" wide. This is a substantial model weighing more than six pounds. Starting in 1957 and continuing throughout the 1960s decade, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. competed head-to-head to be the first to land a man on the moon. The United States succeeded in their efforts and would land a total of six manned spacecraft there between 1969 and 1972. Later, in July 1975, the two countries co-operated in a mission to put an end to this so-called "space race," the Apollo- Soyuz Test Project. The combined crews of Tom Stafford, D. K. Slayton, Vance Brand, Alexei Leonov, and Valerie Kubasov co-operated in joint scientific experiments and this successful engineering feat led to later joint efforts such as Shuttle-Mir and the International Space Station. This gorgeous model symbolizes this landmark achievement beautifully. Incredibly rare. Light toning, one of the Soyuz antennae is loose, otherwise very fine.

Included with this model is a matted and framed (no glass) bi-lingual Certificate of Authenticity issued in Russia and dated 2003. It reads, in part: "I, Michael Levin, certify in the following that the model is genuine and was presented to Evgeny Kirkin - the former doctor for the staff of the second starting place in Baikonur launch pad. Then Mr. Kirkin was working as the director of Hospital #169 in Leninsk city (near Baikonur launch pad). He knew and treated Korolev several times when he visited Baikonur. He knew and treated the Cosmonauts as well."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
