Description

Important ASTP archive from the Soyuz commander.

Apollo-Soyuz Test Project: Group of Nine Original Documents Originally from the Personal Collection of Soviet Mission Commander Alexei Leonov, One Signed. Each approximately 11.75" x 8.25", printed on one side only, five are hand-colored and mounted archivally to 13" x 9.25" mat boards. Once the final agreement between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. was signed, Leonov started to prepare a file dealing with the various reports and details of the preparation and training for the flight. These documents give a complete presentation of the first joint space mission between the two superpowers. Three of the matted and hand-colored diagrams include a chart of the flight from launch and docking and parachute action, a rendering of the two spacecraft docked together (this one is signed), and a description of the communication and control functions. Others list the basic decrees authorizing and administering the flight, the primary and back-up teams for the two space crews, the joint and separate scientific experiments to be conducted, the goals and plans for the mission, the organizational chart of the various "teams" involved, and a description of the 3,600 hour training program required. Originally sold as Lot 178 in Sotheby's second Russian Space History auction on March 16, 1996. Some uneven toning, otherwise fine condition.
