    Choosing the ASTP crew

Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Crew Selection: Archive of Internal Material Including Detailed Handwritten Documents from Deke Slayton and Chris Kraft, Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, with Certificate of Authenticity. We have assembled a group of material from Dr. Kraft's files on the subject of who would fly as the American crew for this historic mission. It is an extremely interesting look at what went on behind the scenes at JSC. Much of this is undated but most seems to be circa 1972. Brief descriptions follow. All items generally fine.

Deke Slayton Autograph Note Signed, "Flight Crews for ASTP": Six pages on letter size lined paper to "AA" (Director Chris Kraft) from "CA" (Slayton). Opens with: " The following data is presented for your consideration in establishing crews for the ASTP mission. In the interest of attempting to present a totally unbiased viewpoint I have assumed myself ineligible. However, for the record, I do consider myself a prime candidate for the mission. I would happily accept any crew position offered." Near the close, he writes: " The strongest crew would be: Shepard, Stafford, Conrad, Young, Scott [crossed out], Haise." The transmittal envelope is included.
Deke Slayton Typed Letter Signed, "Long Range Plan for Astronauts": One page on NASA stationery, to Kraft, dated 7/18/72, with attachments. Slayton and Alan Shepard's master plan regarding current astronauts and their future plans. Three pages included with results of interviews.
Deke Slayton Autograph Note Signed, "ASTP recommendations": Two pages on note paper marked " Kraft - personal" on the verso, dated 8/24/72. Suggests crew titles as " CDR Commander/ CMP Comd. Module pilot/ DMP docking module pilot". Regarding crew composition, he mentions: " no change. All my matrices include Brand & Slayton".
Deke Slayton Autograph Note Signed, "CA management options": Two pages on note paper. Slayton writes regarding jobs and candidates: "... if Slayton to ASTP & Shepard unacceptable to Kraft, Shepard forced to retire. Stafford, Young, Conrad choices for management. Stafford obvious choice for CA..."
Chris Kraft Handwritten Notes and Lists: Ten pages on letter size lined paper asking and answering his own questions regarding the potential crew for ASTP. From first page: " Eliminate/ vThose who have walked on moon/ vPresent Skylab Prime Crews/ vApollo 15 crew/ vSwigert by Decree". Various lists of candidates and possible crews follow.
Typewritten List of Astronauts with Accomplishments: Approximately 40-50 pages, one per astronaut, assembled at the request of Dr. Kraft.
