    Description

Apollo Program 1969-Dated Command Module Lithium Hydroxide Canister. A metal filtration device, 7" x 7" x 5" and weighing eight pounds, that was used in the Apollo Command Module Environmental Control System. On one side is stamped "GROUND TEST ONLY" and there is a plate attached beneath that with the following information: "Part: 813540-2-1/ Serial: 108-331/ Order: NAS-9-150/ NASA: 004000108331/ REF SPEC: ME901-0218-0051, Airesearch Manufacturing Co." The date "APR 14 '69" is stamped to the right along with several inspection stamps. Also, known as an absorber or scrubber, its purpose was to absorb carbon dioxide and to remove odors from the cabin air. Typical Apollo flights would carry a number of these as they were used two at a time and swapped every twelve hours. As widely known from the near-disastrous Apollo 13 flight, the LiOH canisters from the command module did not fit the system in the lunar module where the crew had to stay for most of the flight. With some help from Mission Control, they managed to rig up a usable workaround with tape, hoses, and various on-hand materials. There is a very famous photo showing the Apollo 13 LM ECS rigged to use these square canisters. Very appropriate for museum or institutional displays or a private collection. Very fine condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
