Apollo Moonlandings: Rare NASA Color Lunar Planning Chart LOC-2
Signed by One Moonwalker from Each Landing Mission with Additional
Landing Site Names and Touchdown Dates, also Included are Charts
LOC-1, LOC-3, and LOC-4 (Unsigned). A rare set of four
NASA/ACIC first edition maps dated May 1971, each a gigantic 44.5"
x 41.5", with a scale of 1:2,750,000. The second map is nicely
signed by one moonwalker from each mission, as follows.Apollo 11's Buzz Aldrin: "A Dream of Mankind Becomes True!/ The First Lunar Landing/ Apollo 11 Tranquility Base/ Buzz Aldrin July 20, 1969" (blue felt tip).
Apollo 12's Alan Bean: "Ocean of Storms/ Second Lunar Landing/ November 19, 1969/ A Pinpoint Landing Next/ to Surveyor III/ Alan Bean/ Apollo 12 LMP" (black felt tip).
Apollo 14's Edgar Mitchell: "Fra Mauro Base/ Third Lunar Landing/ Feb 1971/ Edgar Mitchell/ Apollo 14" (blue felt tip).
Apollo 15's Dave Scott: "Hadley Base/ 4th Lunar Landing July-Aug 1971/ Dave Scott/ Apollo 15" (in blue felt tip).
Apollo 16's Charlie Duke: "Descartes and the/ Cayley Plains/ Fifth Lunar Landing/ Charlie Duke Jr/ April 1972/ Apollo 16" (in blue felt tip).
Apollo 17's Gene Cernan: "The Valley/ of/ Taurus Littrow/ Sixth and Final Landing/ December 1972/ Gene Cernan/ Apollo XVII" (in black felt tip).
An identical LOC-2 (only) map with the same signatories sold in November 2018 at Sotheby's for $30,000. Don't miss out on this incredible piece with the rest of the map set included. Stored rolled. Very fine.
Information from an internal 1973 document: "The LOC planning series was designed to satisfy the following requirements: (1) To cover the Apollo area of interest. (2) To provide increased density of feature detail than shown on the 1:5,000,000 LMP series. (3) To show all primary and secondary approved IAU names. (4) To serve as a common base for the various Apollo mission charts. Compilation of the LOCs was initiated in 1968 based upon Lunar Orbiter photography flown in 1966-67, supplemented by Hasselblad coverage from Apollo Missions 8 and 10. Earth-based telescopic full moon photographs were used as source for albedo patterns and ray structure. Details from LAC charts were also used to the extent of their coverage. The revised LOCs, including the new LOC-1, were published in May 1971. The litho colors are the same as the original LOCs; however, the shaded relief was enhanced by the duotone process. This series of charts is the best available lunar coverage at this scale. Also, it is the only chart series with complete up-to-date nomenclature."
