Description

    THE APOLLO PROGRAM

    Rare moonwalker-signed DSKY

Apollo Guidance Computer: Original Display and Keyboard (DSKY) Unit, Signed by Harrison Schmitt. Not flown. A fifteen pound, 8" x 8" x 7" M.I.T.-designed and Raytheon-manufactured data entry and display device with nineteen keys and a twenty-one digit display. The bottom of the front panel is signed in black felt tip: "Jack Schmitt/ Apollo 17" (mid-1980s). A unit like this was mounted into the control panel of each lunar module and two were found in each command module. This was the astronaut's interface allowing access to the groundbreaking on board Apollo Guidance Computer, developed by MIT. It permitted the astronauts to collect and provide flight information and was very important in the precise landings on the moon needed for a successful mission. Each different program had a two-digit code and commands were entered as two-digit numbers in a verb-noun sequence. These units were also used on the Skylab missions and adapted for an experimental fly-by-wire system for the F-8 Crusader. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the DSKY interface and the AGC to the Apollo moon-landing program. A very rarely offered piece of Apollo equipment. Our consignor advises us that this is a thermal mockup; the switches are functional and the display is likely functional but the internal circuitry is not complete. Still, this has the exact appearance of the later units manufactured for use in the program and would display beautifully, especially with the Schmitt autograph. Fine.

The metal plate with a NASA logo on the back surface includes the following information: "APOLLO G & N SYSTEM", "DSKY/ ASSEMBLY", "PART No. 2003994-000", "SERIAL NO. RAY XX", "CONT. NO. NAS 9-497", "Designed by M I T Instrumentation Lab", "MFG BY RAYTHEON CO." There are none of the inspector's stamps that production models usually exhibit.
