Description

Apollo Command Module Environmental Control System Hardware: CO2 Absorber Filter Assembly, AiResearch Part 813540 (Contract NAS-9-150). A Lithium Hydroxide filtration canister, 7.25" x 7.25" x 5.25". One side bears a "Class III/ Not For Flight" sticker; there is a metal ID plate nearby with the following information: "Absorber Element CO2/ Part: 813540-2-1/ Serial: 118-351/ Order: NAS-9-150/ NASA: 004000118361/ REF SPEC: ME901-0218-0051, AiResearch Manufacturing Co." The date "Mar 13 '69" is stamped to the right along with an inspection stamps. Known as an absorber or scrubber, its purpose was to absorb carbon dioxide and to remove odors from the cabin air. Typical Apollo flights would carry a number of these as they were used two at a time and swapped every twelve hours. As widely known from the near-disastrous Apollo 13 flight, the LiOH canisters from the command module did not fit the system in the lunar module where the crew had to stay for most of the flight. With some help from Mission Control, they managed to rig up a usable workaround with duct tape, hoses, and various on-hand materials. There is a very famous photo showing the Apollo 13 LM ECS rigged to use these square canisters, copy included. Perfect for display. Very fine condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
