    Description

Apollo 9 Flown Engraved Spoon Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, with Signed Letter of Certification. This 6" long Silco Stainless teaspoon is engraved on the handle, "LMP/ IX". Eating in space made a giant leap forward during the Apollo era as they had the luxury of both cold and hot water. The invention of a device called the "spoon-bowl" allowed a more normal eating experience of rehydrated food; a plastic zipper was opened and the food was removed with a spoon. The moisture content in the food allowed it to cling to the spoon. Apollo astronauts were thus the first to use eating utensils such as this spoon in flight. A very important item for Schweickart, likely used every day during the ten day earth orbit mission. Rarely offered. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Rusty Schweickart on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that the Silco stainless steel spoon that accompanies this letter, engraved with the designation, LMP IX, was flown with me on my Apollo 9 mission, March 3-13, 1969. It has been part of my personal collection since the mission."
