    APOLLO 8

Apollo 8 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 290, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Gene Cernan, with Signed LOA. This sterling silver 38mm x 30mm triangular-shaped medal was one of 300 flown on Apollo 8, December 21-27, 1968, into lunar orbit with crewmembers Borman, Lovell, and Anders. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia (a Lovell design) depicting a figure eight containing the surnames of the crew looping around the Earth and the moon symbolizing the mission number as well as the mission's orbits around both bodies. The three-sided shape with a rounded bottom imitates the shape of the Apollo spacecraft. The reverse has the engraved dates of the mission, serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. These three men were the first ever to escape Earth's gravity and to see the "dark side of the moon." The original plastic Robbins case with numbered sticker on the bottom is included. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Cernan on his letterhead stating, in full: "The specially struck Robbins medallions carried into space by astronaut crews ever since the Apollo VII mission in 1968 have become some of the most sought after items for space collectors. This Robbins medallion (numbered 290) is one of 300 such medals carried aboard the Apollo VIII mission to the moon by its crew, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders. Apollo VIII was the first manned mission on a Saturn V rocket, and the first of mankind's voyages to the moon. While circling the moon on Christmas Eve, the crew took the first ever pictures of the Earth rising over the lunar horizon. It took a bold decision to send Apollo VIII to the moon at that period in history and paved the way for follow on flights by America to the surface of the moon. This medallion came from the personal collection of Barbara Cernan Butler presented to her by Captain Gene Cernan."
