Description

    Apollo 8 Flown Relics, Group of Three. Included: (1) A 2" x 1.375" x 0.75" segment of Insulated Silicone Elastomer Gasket as was installed between the command module heat shield and crew compartment interface gaps. This was a part of the Thermal Protection System (TPS). The interior consists of cellulose Insulation, a strip of woven fiberglass, aluminum thermal foil hand wrapped with 1" strip of material, and partially covered with RTV 511 Silicon, then molded to the joint with RTV 560; (2) A 4.75" x 0.875" strip of Thermal Foil Tape which was used for thermal shielding of sensitive system components of the command module. This sample has RTV 511 Silicon on the face and a strip of oxidized foil on the back; and (3) A substantial 3.5" x 2" piece of thermal shielding foil. This aluminum foil was adhered with Dow Corning RTV 560 and externally applied to the Apollo aft, forward and main sub structures to provide thermal protection to the crew compartment and heat sensitive components. This piece of foil came from the aft compartment. Seldom offered. All of these items were removed from the command module after the flight by the post flight test team of North American Rockwell Corporation. From the Jerald B. Wilken Space Collection; includes a group of five photocopies showing his association with the Apollo program, including published photos of him with the Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 command modules at the Rockwell facility in Downey, California.
