DescriptionApollo 8 Flown Heat Shield Ablative Panel Plug in Acrylic. A 1" long plug sealed with a photo of the Apollo 8 space capsule next to the North American Aviation employee who removed this plug and cards with the text: "Apollo 8 Lunar Orbit Mission Launched December 21, 1968 ½ Million Miles in 147 Hours, 11 Seconds" and "Ablative Panel Plug 4700° F at Entry". Very fine condition with some yellowing and mounting traces on the bottom.
Included with this lot is a collectSPACE.com Statement of Provenance stating that this "...was formerly the property of Howard E. Spencer [who] worked for North American Aviation during the Apollo Program... As part of his responsibilities on the recovery team, Spencer was in direct contact with the Apollo 8 spacecraft aboard the primary recovery ship, the U.S.S. Yorktown."
