    Description

Apollo 8 Flown American Flag on Crew-Signed Presentation Originally Presented by James Lovell to His Aunt and Uncle. A 5.75" x 4" cloth U.S. flag on a 14 x 10" mat-mounted sheet with the printed caption: "Carried on Board Apollo 8 First Lunar Flight 21-27 December, 1968". There is a handwritten inscription (faded- barely visible) by Lovell: "To Uncle Leon & Aunt Jean Coleman/ Best wishes from Apollo 8 Crew". At bottom are the signatures of the crew: "Frank Borman" (almost completely faded); "James Lovell" (partially faded); and "Bill Anders" (quite visible). As is often the case, this was matted and framed and proudly displayed on a wall for decades causing the severe fading seen here. Also common is the glue stains on the flag. Still, an important memento from man's first trip to the moon as given to beloved members of James Lovell's family. Fair.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
