Apollo 8 Flown American Flag and Embroidered Mission Insignia Patch on Crew-Signed Certificate, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission CapCom Jerry Carr, Flag Signed and Certified by James Lovell, with LOA. This 5.875" x 3.875" cloth U.S. flag and 4.375" x 4.125" triangular-shaped embroidered mission patch, both flown in orbit around the moon on man's first mission there, have been mounted to a 14" x 11" parchment-type paper. Beneath the flag is printed "To Jerry Carr Thanks for all your help" with the crew's bold signatures below: "Frank Borman", "James Lovell", and "Bill Anders". To the right, the certificate reads: "Carried on Board Apollo 8/ First Lunar Flight/ 21 - 27 December, 1968". The flag has been signed on the lowest two white stripes: "On Board the Apollo 8 Spacecraft/ James Lovell". An extremely rare and desirable space relic with two items flown on this landmark mission and originally presented to a member of the astronaut corps. Toned, minor chipping around the edges would easily mat out. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a handwritten Letter of Authenticity from JoAnn Carr. It reads, in part: "My husband Gerald Carr (Jerry) was a member of the astronaut corps and was assigned to support the Apollo 8 mission. This flown patch and flag were presented to him in appreciation of his efforts."
