DescriptionApollo 8 Flown Aft Heat Shield Ablator Plug Fragment. A piece, 1.125" x 0.625" x 0.375", black and charred from the intense heat generated by atmospheric re-entry. These were used extensively throughout the heatshield to cover any of the fasteners which attached the heat shield panels. Generally the diameter of the mechanical fastener plugs were in the 0.5" to 1" diameter range. This was removed from the command module after the flight by the post flight test team of North American Rockwell Corporation. From the Jerald B. Wilken Space Collection; includes a group of five photocopies showing his association with the Apollo program, including published photos of him with the Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 command modules at the Rockwell facility in Downey, California.
