Description

Apollo 8 Crew-Signed Official First Day Cover for the "Apollo 8" Stamp Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Michael Collins, Signed and Certified. A philatelic cover cancelled at Houston, Texas, May 5, 1969, on the first day of issue of the 6ยข "Apollo 8" stamp. This official cachet picturing the three-sided mission insignia is from the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club and bears the text: "Commemorating the First Manned Lunar Orbit on Christmas Eve during the Flight of Apollo VIII December 21-27, 1968". It is signed neatly around the insignia: "Frank Borman", "James Lovell", and "Bill Anders". On the verso flap, Collins has signed: "From my personal collection-/ Michael Collins". Interestingly, Collins was originally slated to be the Apollo 8 command module pilot but was replaced by Lovell because of a back injury. One paperclip indention at top, otherwise excellent condition.
