The MFA program was instituted at NASA after Gemini as a method to instill a strong sense of quality and flight safety in its employees and those of its contractors by various motivational methods and awards. These medals were part of that emphasis and are very collectible. As follows.
Apollo 8: The first of these medals issued, contains metal that flew to the moon and back, 1.5" (38 mm) in diameter.
Apollo 11: The second issued, contains metal from both Columbia and Eagle, 1.25" in diameter.
