Description

With photo signed "Ronnie Walter (Walt) Cunningham"

Apollo 7 Flown American Flag Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Walt Cunningham, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA and Signed Color Photo. A 6" x 3.875" cloth U.S. flag that flew along with crewmembers Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and Walt Cunningham on this eleven day mission, October 11-22, 1968, the first three-man crew in U.S. space history. Cunningham has signed on the lowest white stripe: "Carried with me on Apollo 7 Walt Cunningham". Launched atop a Saturn 1B rocket (another first), Apollo 7 was the shakedown cruise to test the newly redesigned Apollo command module. The success of this mission, after the tragic Apollo 1 launch pad fire, was encouraging to NASA and led to the launch of Apollo 8 to the moon just two months later. This flag circled the Earth 163 times and flew more than four million miles in space. Included with this lot is a 10" x 8" color Apollo 7 crew NASA litho photo with a rare variant signature form in black felt tip: "Apollo 7 Crew---/ Ronnie Walter (Walt) Cunningham/ Apollo 7". Both excellent.

Included in this lot is a signed Certification of Authenticity letter from Cunningham on his letterhead. It reads, in full: "This four by six inch American flag accompanied me on the 4,500,000 mile flight of Apollo 7, the first manned mission of the Apollo Program to land a man on the Moon, October 11-22, 1968. This flag has been continuously in my possession since that time and Apollo 7 is still the longest, most ambitious and most successful first manned test of any new flying machine.

"I flew the mission for space exploration, for my country, and for the personal accomplishment. The American flag was among the most meaningful items I carried with me onboard our spacecraft. It symbolized the ambition, effort, self-sacrifice, and pride we felt as we raced to the Moon. It is a reminder of the 'golden age of manned spaceflight,' when man first left our home planet to land on another body in the universe, the single most memorable accomplishment of the twentieth century."
