Description

Worn on Man's Last Ever "Deep Space" E.V.A.

Apollo 17 Command Module Flown Omega Speedmaster Watch Strap Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Ron Evans. A 21.5" long x 0.75" wide black cloth strap, partially covered with Velcro, with a metal slip-through at one end, marked "P/N SEB 12100030-202" and "S/N 1087". This was used to attach Evans' Omega chronograph to his space suit. During the trip home from the moon, Evans performed a one-hour+ space walk, the last ever in deep space, to retrieve film canisters from the Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) Bay on the service module. There is a photo of him with this strap around his left arm; a print is included with the lot. At one point in his EVA he even mentions that he wore his watch (on this strap) and forgot to engage the stopwatch feature:

CMP-EVA (Ron Evans): Let me see. Hey, I got to make sure I get this on the right handle here, don't I? Gee, that's why I wore my watch, and I forgot to start it. (Laughter) Okay. About 40 minutes, huh?
CapCom: We've got you 35 minutes - 36 minutes, Ron.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Jan Evans (Mrs. Ron Evans) stating: "I certify that the watchstrap offered with this letter, marked as P/N SEB 12100030-202 and serial number 1087 was flown to the moon on board the Apollo 17 spacecraft, December 1972. This watchstrap was worn with a Speedmaster by my husband Ron Evans during his EVA on December 17, 1972. It has been with our family since the flight."
