Apollo 16 Recovery Ship U.S.S. Ticonderoga Hat Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander John Young, Certified and Signed. A dark blue baseball-style cap with gold embroidered bullion on the bill and an embroidered "U.S.S. Ticonderoga CVS-14 VIP CAPT J. W. YOUNG" on the front and "APOLLO 16" on the back. The Ticonderoga was commissioned, May 1944, as an Essex-class aircraft carrier, decommissioned after the war, and later recommissioned as an antisubmarine carrier in the 1950s, seeing much action during the Vietnam War. Apollo 16 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near American Samoa on April 27, 1972, just three miles from the ship. There are several photos of Young, Mattingly, and Duke aboard the Ticonderoga wearing the hats they were given upon boarding. Two such photos are included with this lot. The cap was manufactured in Japan and has the original tag from Su-pa,.U.S. Navy Tailor. Size 7. Excellent condition with some deterioration to the plastic liner affecting nothing.

Under the bill of this hat, Young has written: "Worn Aboard A-16 Recovery Ship. John Young".
