    Traces of Moon Dust...

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown Bungee Restraint Strap from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Pilot Charlie Duke. A 0.625" x 10.25" (unextended) strap with snap closures consisting of two heavy cloth pieces, 3.5: in length, held together by a spring. There is a number printed on one end, "V35-601170-31/ 06362AAJ2243". This was used in the Lunar Module Orion during its nearly three days on the moon and still has light traces of the fine gray lunar dust it was exposed to there. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Authenticity from Charles M. Duke, Jr. on his personal letterhead stating, in part: "[This bungee strap] was a part of the official Apollo XVI lunar module hardware... [It] was used to secure various pieces of equipment in the LM. This included our 'Rock Boxes' and Lunar Surface Sample Bags... It has been in my possession and a part of my personal space collection since the mission. May it remind you of the adventure that was Apollo where humans first set foot on another heavenly body."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
