    Description

    Ex. John Young

Apollo 16 Flown Larger-Size United Nations Flag Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. An 11.5" x 7.75" cloth U.N. flag that flew aboard Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972, on the fifth manned mission to land on the moon. This flag stayed in the Command Module Casper with Ken Mattingly in lunar orbit while John Young and Charlie Duke flew the Lunar Module Orion to the surface of the moon. Space flown United Nations flags, especially of this size, are not common. Its scarcity, combined with the very displayable large size, makes this a particularly desirable item. Several storage folds, otherwise excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the large size UNITED NATIONS flag accompanying this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label, #1733190, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
