DescriptionApollo 15 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 076, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, with Signed LOAs. This 35mm sterling silver medal is one of only 127 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 15, July 26 - August 7, 1971, with crewmembers Dave Scott, Al Worden, and Jim Irwin. There were 304 of these originally struck for the 1971 mission but due to capsule weight restrictions, only a portion were actually flown. Also, there was a spelling error on the landing site (Appennines instead of Apennines), so after the flight, the unflown medals were returned to the Robbins Company for correction. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting three stylized birds flying above the Hadley Rille area of the moon with craters spelling out "XV" to the right. The reverse features the phrase "Man's Flight Through Life Is Sustained By The Power Of His Knowledge" around, Air Force wings (it was an all-Air Force crew), and the dates of the mission. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. Excellent.
Included with this lot is a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Dr. Mitchell on his letterhead stating, in part: "This certification accompanies Apollo 15 Robbins Medallion, serial number 076. The medallion was flown aboard the spacecraft Endeavour on the Apollo 15 expedition to the moon which launched July 26, 1971, with David Scott as the commander, James Irwin as Lunar Module Pilot, and Al Worden as the Command Module Pilot... As a member of the Astronaut Office at the time of this flight, I was permitted to purchase this medal, one of only 127 that flew on the mission. There were 304 produced in total... I hereby certify that I presented this medal to Jean Beaulieu shortly after the mission and it has been in her possession since receiving it."
Also included is a signed Letter of Provenance from Jean Beaulieu stating, in part: "For several years I was fortunate to be both friend and associate to Astronaut Edgar Mitchell. Due to our association, Dr. Mitchell gave me a Robbins Medallion after each of the Apollo flights. I still have ten of these medals in my possession. While I was employed as an artist at NASA, I submitted the insignia design which was chosen for the Apollo 14 Mission and used for the Robbins Medallion. Early in our association, I was pleased to introduce Dr. Mitchell to the psychic world. He developed a deep interest in the world of psychic phenomena, which lead him to conduct ESP experiments from space during the Apollo 14 flight. After he completed his mission, I became Dr. Mitchell's assistant while he further explored metaphysical phenomena, wrote his first book Psychic Exploration: A Challenge for Science, Understanding the Nature and Power of Consciousness, and founded the Institute of Noetic Science."
