Apollo 15 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 069, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Charlie Duke, with Signed LOA. This 35mm sterling silver medal is one of only 127 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 15, July 26 - August 7, 1971, with crewmembers Dave Scott, Al Worden, and Jim Irwin. There were 304 of these originally struck for the 1971 mission but due to capsule weight restrictions, only a portion were actually flown. Also, there was a spelling error on the landing site (Appennines instead of Apennines), so after the flight, the unflown medals were returned to the Robbins Company for correction. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting three stylized birds flying above the Hadley Rille area of the moon with craters spelling out "XV" to the right. The reverse features the phrase "Man's Flight Through Life Is Sustained By The Power Of His Knowledge" around, Air Force wings (it was an all-Air Force crew), and the dates of the mission. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. The original plastic Robbins case is included. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a 2003-dated signed Letter of Authenticity from Duke on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "This Is To Certify that the accompanying Apollo 15 Silver Robbins Medallion, bearing Serial Number 69, was flown to the moon aboard the Apollo 15 Command Module 'Endeavour' during the first extended scientific exploration of the lunar surface. During the Apollo Program, astronauts were permitted to obtain Robbins Medallions from each others missions, and as such I acquired this example shortly after Apollo 7 returned to Earth. Medallion No. 69 is one of only 127 silver medals flown to the moon aboard Apollo 15, and as such it has remained a treasured part of my personal space collection since 1968."
