Description

Apollo 15 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Ron Evans, Serial Number 084. There were 304 of these sterling silver 35mm medals originally struck for this 1971 mission. Due to a spelling error on the landing site (Appennines instead of Apennines), only 127 were actually flown along with crewmembers Scott, Worden, and Irwin. The balance was returned to the Robbins Company for correction but was not ready in time for the takeoff. The obverse features the mission insignia with three stylized bird images flying over the moon's surface with craters to the right forming the Roman numerals "XV". The reverse has the Air Force wings (all three crewmembers were Air Force veterans), the dates, and the saying "Man's Flight Through Life is Sustained by the Power of His Knowledge". The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling hallmark. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned lunar landing, July 26-August 7, 1971, and the first of the extended "J" missions with longer durations on the moon and more emphasis on science. Includes its original plastic case with "084F" sticker on the bottom. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Jan Evans (Mrs. Ron Evans) stating, in part: "I certify that the Apollo 15 silver Robbins Medallion, serial number 84, is one that was flown on board the Apollo 15 spacecraft... This medallion has been with our family since that time."
