Description

Apollo 15 Crew-Signed Insurance Cover Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Al Worden, Signed and Certified (Twice), with Signed LOA. A philatelic cover, postmarked July 26, 1971, with a pictorial NASA cancellation from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, over an 8ยข "Antarctic Treaty" stamp. At left is a color cachet of the mission insignia with "NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club" printed above and "Official Commemorative Cover" below. The three crewmembers have neatly signed beneath the cachet: "Dave Scott", "Al Worden", and "Jim Irwin". Underneath the flap, Worden has written: "From My Personal Collection/ Al Worden/ Apollo 15 CMP" and "#62 AMW" Below the flap, he has signed: "Apollo 15 Insurance Cover from my collection/ Al Worden/ Apollo 15 CMP". The original stiffening card is included, printed on both sides with mission data. Extremely fine.

Included with this lot is a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Worden on his letterhead that gives a precise explanation of the history and purpose of these insurance covers. It states, in part: "I hereby certify that the commemorative postal cover, number 62, included with this letter is an Apollo 15 insurance cover. It has been in my possession since the Apollo 15 flight in 1971. The NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club in Houston, Texas provided these covers to our crew. They were signed by us before the flight, stamped, postmarked on the day of our launch, then held by our families during our flight. The purpose of these covers was to provide each crewmember's family with a type of insurance in the event that we did not return. There was no other insurance available to our crew because of the risk of flights to the moon."
