This Flag Was Flown to the Lunar Surface Aboard the Lunar Module "Antares"...

Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown American Flag, Presented by Mission Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa. A 5.5" x 4" silk American flag mounted to a mat board and framed along with two 7" x 6.5" mission photos and an explanatory text panel; the overall size is 21.25" x 17.25". The text reads, in full: "This flag was flown to the lunar surface aboard the Lunar Module, Antares, and returned to Earth aboard the Command Module, Kittyhawk on the Apollo 14 mission to Fra Mauro January 31 -February 9, 1971." Beneath this Roosa (1933-1994) has written: "To Bert Klineburger-/ These vehicles are faster than a Land Rover but the shooting isn't as good- Best Wishes Stuart A. Roosa". Roosa presented this flown relic to his friend and legendary big game hunter, Bert Klineburger, after the flight. This flag spent thirty-three+ hours on the surface of the moon in the LM Antares while Shepard and Mitchell performed experiments and gathered samples. Items flown to the surface of the moon are the most desirable to collectors. Very fine condition with some fading and a minor crease at far left of the mat.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
