DescriptionApollo 14 Flown State Flag of New York Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell. Offered here is a 6" x 4" cloth New York flag that was carried aboard Apollo 14 on its mission to the moon in 1971. This flight is particularly popular with sports fans. Not only did Alan Shepard hit golf balls on the moon but Mitchell made a "javelin" toss using a lunar scoop handle. The New York state flag pictures two sailing ships in its coat of arms as well as the Latin word "Excelsior" which can be translated (very appropriately) "higher" or "ever upward." Excellent condition.
Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Edgar Mitchell" on his personal letterhead stating: "This letter is to certify that the accompanying 'State of New York' Flag (4" x 6"), was carried into lunar orbit aboard the Command Module Kittyhawk on the Apollo 14 mission to the Fra Mauro Highlands January 31 to February 9, 1971. It was in lunar orbit for 67 hours. This flag has been in my personal collection of Apollo memorabilia since that time. Enjoy it in remembrance of that historic period."
