    Apollo 14 Flown State Flag of Massachusetts Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified. This 6" x 4.25" silk flag was carried aboard Apollo 14, the third successful moon landing mission, with crewmembers Shepard, Mitchell, and Roosa, January 31-February 9, 1971. Dr. Mitchell has certified this flag at the bottom: "Carried to the moon on Apollo 14 Edgar Mitchell". This flag, official since 1908, bears the state motto: "Ense Petit Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem (By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty). Excellent condition.

    Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Edgar Mitchell" on his personal letterhead stating (in part): "This letter is to certify that the accompanying 4 x 6 inch flag of state of Massachusetts was carried into lunar orbit aboard the spacecraft Kittyhawk in my personal preference kit (PPK) during the Apollo 14 mission to the moon and has been in my collection since that flight..."
