Description

Apollo 14 Flown American Flag Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. This 6.125" x 4" cloth U.S. flag was carried aboard Apollo 14, the third successful moon landing mission, with crewmembers Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell, January 31-February 9, 1971. Dr. Mitchell has signed this flag on the verso at the two lowest white stripes: "Flown to the moon on Apollo 14 Edgar Mitchell". A couple of storage folds at the corners, otherwise excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Certificate of Authenticity on his personal letterhead stating, in part: "This document certifies that the accompanying 4" x 6" U.S.A. flag was carried in my personal preference kit (PPK) aboard Kittyhawk from January 31, 1971 to February 9, 1971 during the Apollo 14 mission..."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
