DescriptionApollo 14 Command Module Flown Optics Panel Handhold, Presented by Mission Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa. This plastic encased handhold measures approximately 7" x 1" and has been attached to a 10" x 6" wooden plaque with an engraved plate reading: "This Optics Panel Handhold was used onboard the Command Module Kittyhawk on the Apollo 14 mission to Fra Mauro. Jan. 31 - Feb. 9, 1971. Presented to Kenneth Campbell by Astronaut Stuart Roosa". Stuart Roosa (1933-1994) piloted the LM Kitty Hawk while crewmates Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell piloted the LM Antares to the moon.
Included with this lot is a Typed Letter Signed "Stuart A Roosa" dated August 4, 1971 to Charles K. Campbell. It reads, in part: "...This hand hold is to steady the command module pilot in the 'zero g' environment while he makes sightings through the optical system... This hand hold traveled 1,151,086 miles during the 216 hours, 1 minute and 58.1 seconds of flight"
