Description

Apollo 13 NASA Certificate of Commendation Presented to Charlie Duke and Originally from His Personal Collection. A 14" x 11" certificate in calligraphy on parchment-type paper bearing the gold NASA seal and signed "Robert R Gilruth" at Houston, Texas, in December 1970. As Duke was the backup lunar module pilot for the Apollo 13 mission, he was pressed into service after the explosion in the Service Module. Duke played a key role in testing various new procedures in the ground simulator at the Manned Spacecraft Center before they were transmitted to the Apollo 13 astronauts. It was definitely a team effort at Mission Control to formulate plans and procedures to get the crew safely back to earth and he played a big part in that. For that extreme level of service he was awarded this certificate. Complete text below. This commendation is mentioned in Duke's list of awards and honors. Perfect for framing. Very fine.

"National Aeronautics and Space Administration Manned Spacecraft Center Presents this Certificate of Commendation to Charles M. Duke, Jr. In recognition of his outstanding effort in validating new flight procedures in the mission simulators during the Apollo 13 emergency. These flight procedures had to be implemented into the flight plan and transmitted to the crew beginning immediately after the crisis. On an hour-by-hour basis he flew the new flight plan in a simulator and verified its accuracy before it accepted by the flight controllers and the astronauts. His dedication, responsiveness, and exhaustive personal efforts significantly contributed to the safe return of the astronauts."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
