Description

Used for critical "speed-up" burn which provided a better margin for survival

Apollo 13 Flown Speed-Up Burn Checklist Cue Card Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 10.25" x 4.5" (overall) odd-shaped heavyweight printed card dated March 20, 1970. It bears notations made during the mission including: "Idle - 5 sec/ 40% to 26 sec/ 100% for remainder" and is signed: "Used for speed up burn/ Apollo 13/ James Lovell". This PC+2 burn was critical. Without it, the ship's trajectory would likely have returned the crew to Earth at 155 hours. This was too close for comfort timewise so Mission Control determined that the LM's engines could handle the required burn. A successful burn two hours after rounding the far side of the moon, aided by this cue card, boosted the craft's speed by 860 feet per second and cut their arrival down to 142 hours elapsed time; it also moved the landing spot from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific. This burn was so accurate that only two more small course corrections were later needed. There are six strips of Velcro on the verso for attachment to the control panel. What a rare opportunity to own a flown item so important to bringing the Apollo 13 crew home safely. Don't miss out on this one. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Lovell on his company letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that the attached Apollo 13 checklist on board the Apollo 13 spacecraft. Apollo 13 perilous flight took off on April 11 and returned safely on April 17, 1970. This checklist was attached to the instrument panel and was used for the speed-up burn after coming around the moon. The lunar module descent engine was on for 261 seconds and shortened the flight time home from 155 hours to 142 hours. This checklist was from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
