    Apollo 13 flown meal container

Apollo 13 Flown Space Food Meal Container Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise, with Signed LOA, in Framed Display. A 7.5" x 6.5" clear plastic pouch bearing a label: "Day - 1 Meal - C" with an inspector's stamp and a piece of blue Velcro. It is attractively double matted and framed to an overall 15.25" x 20.25" with a printed certification statement from Haise at top and his signature and an enamel Apollo 13 mission insignia pin below. The astronauts' food was packaged together like this by day and meal. Not common. A handsome display. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a 2008-dated signed Letter of Authenticity from Haise on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "This container for DAY - 1 MEAL - C was carried around the moon on the flight of Apollo 13 during April 11 to 17,1970. At just under 56 hours into the mission, an oxygen tank explosion resulted in a major loss of electrical power to the Command and Service Module. This event caused a scrub of the lunar landing and forced us to move into the Lunar Module in order to survive a four day journey around the moon and return back to earth. With the loss of power in our Command Module we lost also lost hot water. As a result this meal was one of only a few that were consumed during the flight. Many individuals from NASA and our contractor team worked around the clock to ensure our safe return. I certify that the DAY - 1 MEAL - C package was flown on the Apollo 13 Mission and has been in my personal space artifact collection since 1970."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
