Description

Apollo 13 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Ed Gibson, Serial Number 384, with Signed LOA. This 32mm sterling silver medal is one of 404 struck from metal flown aboard Apollo 13, April 11-17, 1970, with crewmembers Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. Due to the last minute crew change and the problems that prohibited Apollo 13 from accomplishing its mission, all of the original flown medallions were melted down and 404 newly designed sterling silver medallions were struck. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan "Ex Luna, Scientia" ("from the moon, knowledge"). The reverse features the names of the crewmembers, the modules, Aquarius (lunar) and Odyssey (command), the engraved dates of launch and return, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. In Gibson's original coin flip numbered "21" (see reference below). Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a certificate of authenticity signed "Ed Gibson" stating: "The Space Medallion that accompanies this Certificate is from my personal collection. It was made from the medallions flown on the Apollo XIII mission. I have been its sole owner, and it has been in my possession since being acquired directly from the mission's flight crew during the time I was an active astronaut. Thus, I unequivocally guarantee its authenticity. The summary description of this medallion follows: Flight-Crew, Flown-Metal, Robbins, Silver, Mission Medallion - Apollo XIII, #384. My Space Medallion Collection Number 21."
