Would have been worn on the lunar surface...

Apollo 13 Flown Piece of PLSS Backpack Signed by and from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell. This is an odd-shaped quadrangle, 11.5" x 9.5" overall, made of Beta cloth lined with several layers of a perforated metallic foil material, cut from the Lovell's Portable Life Support System backpack. Sewn-on tags read: "O2 ACTUATOR", "ON", "OFF", LOCK PIN", "SOURCE PRESSURE" (upside down from the others), and one with "J. LOVELL" stamped in red. Lovell has certified and signed on the front: "Piece of Apollo 13 PLS backpack- for use on the lunar surface- James Lovell". The PLSS is what a moonwalking astronaut would wear on his back to provide the functions of the spacecraft life support system in a smaller, self-contained package. Had it not been for the explosion aboard Apollo 13, forcing a return to Earth after only a flyby of the moon, this would have been worn by Lovell as he walked on the lunar surface. Extremely fine condition save for some light soiling.

This lot includes a signed Letter of Authenticity from Lovell on his letterhead stating: "I hereby certify that this PLSS Backpack piece was removed from the PLSS before we abandoned the Lunar Module on the way back from the moon on April 17, 1970. This piece of backpack is from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."
