No American Flag Has Flown Farther From the Earth!Apollo 13 Flown Large-Size American Flag Signed by and from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell. An impressive large 18" x 12" silk American flag flown on the Command Module Odyssey on its perilous journey to the moon and back in 1970. Lovell has written on the bottom white stripe: "On board Apollo 13 Around the Moon James Lovell". It is generally accepted that the three crewmembers of this mission, Lovell, Haise, and Swigert, were at one point on April 15, 1970, farther from the Earth than any other humans had ever been- 248,655 miles! This is a record that has never been broken. This flag actually reached a point 158 miles from the far side of the lunar surface. A flown flag worthy of the finest of personal or institutional collections. Excellent condition with several folds.
This lot includes a signed Letter of Authenticity from Lovell stating that: [This item] was flown on board the Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey during it's perilous flight around the moon April 11-17, 1970."
