Description

Apollo 13 Flown Embroidered Patch of the 179th Tactical Fighter Group with a Letter of Authenticity from Mission Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise. A handsome shield-shaped 4.75" x 5" unit insignia, one of twelve carried by Haise on the mission as a favor for an old friend. Haise was a member of the 179th Tactical Fighter Group of the Ohio Air National Guard 1960-1963 while working as a test pilot for NASA in Cleveland. Comes with a detailed history of this patch from the original owner. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Fred Haise on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby warrant and certify that the accompanying 179th Tactical Fighter Group patch was carried to the moon on LM-7 'Aquarius' during the aborted Apollo 13 Mission flown April 11-17, 1970. I had served with this Ohio ANG unit during my early NASA career as a Research Pilot at Lewis Research Center. I served as the Lunar Module Pilot on this flight that was slated to complete the third lunar landing of the Apollo Program. The flight was aborted due to an electrical short and explosion in an oxygen tank at 55:53:20 Mission Elapsed Time (MET), some 200,000 miles from earth. The teamwork exhibited, in affecting a safe recovery, was dramatized in the 1995 'Apollo 13' Hollywood movie."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
