Apollo 12 Lunar Module Flown Grumman Tie Pin Directly from the
Family Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Richard Gordon,
with Handwritten Letter of Authenticity. A gold-colored 17mm
diameter pin with an enameled U.S. flag against a lunar surface
background on the front. The reverse features the text: "Flown To
The Moon By An Intrepid Crew/ Apollo XII/ November 1969" above a
Navy Pilot's insignia, with "Conrad - Gordon - Bean" beneath. The
call sign for the Apollo 12 Lunar Module LM-6 was Intrepid
and the Navy Wing pays honor to the three naval pilots aboard the
mission. There were only fifty of these pins that spent more than
thirty-one hours on the lunar surface from November 19 to 20, 1969.
Their history is documented in the book, Chariots for
Apollo, by Charles Pellegrino (New York: Avon Books, 1999, page
233): "Tommy Attridge had sent fifty gold pins along with Pete
Conrad and Alan Bean. They were round, like the moon, and heavily
cratered, with the Stars and Stripes (the wrong number of stripes)
in the foreground. On their backs were engraved the words FLOWN TO
THE MOON BY AN INTREPID CREW. Conrad and Bean were permitted to
keep twenty-five of the pins, to hand out to whomever they chose."
Rare. Very fine.Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed LOA on Gordon's Apollo XII stationery reading in part: "This gold tie tack was carried to the moons Ocean of Storms aboard the Lunar Module Intrepid, It is one of a edition of 50, of which 25 were given to the crew of Apollo 12... This 'moon pin" has been in my personal collection since the conclusion of the Apollo XII Mission/ Richard Gordon Apollo XII CMP".
