    Description

"I carried it in my left arm pocket during both moonwalks"

Apollo 12 Lunar Module Flown and Surface-Used Fisher AG-7 Space Pen Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, with Handwritten LOA. This pen, with a chrome-like finish, is approximately 5.25" long with a piece of Velcro attached near the top allowing it to be easily fastened to surfaces of the spacecraft. The part number as printed on the top is partially worn off; the serial number is visible as "S/N 1058". This one still writes, excellent with only very light wear.

Included in this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Authenticity on his personal letterhead. It reads, in full:
"I hereby certify that the accompanying silver metal Fisher pen traveled with me to the Lunar Surface on the Ocean of Storms in November 1969.

"I used this pen in our Command Module, 'Yankee Clipper' on the way to and from the moon. I used it during descent and landing on the Moon inside our Lunar Module, 'Intrepid' and on liftoff to rendezvous with the orbiting Command Module.

"I carried it in my left arm pocket during both moonwalks.

    "Alan Bean Apollo 12 LMP"

NASA needed a pen that would reliably write in zero-gravity; an inventor and pen maker named Paul Fisher developed such an item on his own and patented it in 1966. NASA tested it for two years and then, every astronaut from Apollo 7 on used this pen in space, as did the cosmonauts of the Soviet space program. The Fisher pen's refill is hermetically sealed and pressurized. The ink is forced out by compressed nitrogen at a pressure of nearly thirty-five pounds per square inch allowing it to write upside-down, at high altitudes, underwater, and (of course) on the moon.
