    Description

"We carried these three pins with us on our Apollo 12 mission to the moon..."

Apollo 12 (Likely Lunar Module) Flown Custom 14K Gold Crescent Moon with Yankee Clipper Originally Gifted by Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean to His Wife Sue, with Handwritten and Signed Letters of Authenticity from Both, With Photos of Sue Bean Wearing It and Further Documentation. A 1.125" x 1.875" hammered gold pin by James Avery bearing a 0.75" x 1.125" clipper ship symbolic of the call sign of the mission's Command Module Yankee Clipper (the crewmembers were all Navy guys). It was flown (along with the other two wives' pins) in Charles Conrad's PPK (copy included) likely to the lunar surface. Included are two photos of Sue Bean wearing this pin, once at the White House, the other at the New York ticker tape parade. Also included is the James Avery paperwork. An incredible "one of only three" unique piece worthy of the finest collections. Excellent.

Included with the lot is a handwritten and signed 2010-dated Letter of Certification from Sue Bean stating, in part: "I hereby certify that the 14kt 'Gold Crescent Moon with Yankee Clipper' pin that accompanies this letter is one of the three that jeweler James Avery made for the wives of Apollo 12 crew in the fall of 1969. All of the pins were flown to the moon... I wore this pin to the many official functions that Alan and I attended in honor of Apollo 12... This pin has been in my possession since receiving it from Alan shortly after the mission."

The entire story is told in a handwritten and signed Letter of Authentication from Alan Bean reading, in full:

"When Charles 'Pete' Conrad, Dick Gordon, and I were assigned as the crew of Apollo 12, with the objective of making the second manned landing on the moon, we began to think of the emblem that would identify and personalize our mission. We were all Naval Aviators prior to our selection as NASA Astronauts, so a nautical theme was the most appealing. With that in mind, and the desire to make the ship uniquely American, we selected a famous ship of the age of the fast sailing ships, 'Yankee Clipper'. Rather the rounding Cape Horn, or The Cape of Good Hope, we would show it sailing majestically round the limb of the Moon. We use this theme in our Apollo 12 Mission Patch and in our call signs with mission control; 'Yankee Clipper' for our Command Service Module, and 'Intrepid' for our Lunar Module.

"Jane Conrad, the wife of our crew commander Pete, had three beautiful gold pins created, one for each of our wives. These 'unique in all the world' pins were of a gold crescent moon with The Yankee Clipper moving across it.

"We carried these three pins with us on our Apollo 12 mission to the moon in November of 1969, and are listed in Pete's PPK list S/N 1029. I do not know if Pete took these three special pins to the Lunar Surface with him on November 19, 1969, but it would be unlike him not to, since it would have meant so much to us and to our wives.

"Shortly after our return to Earth, Pete and Jane presented the pins to Dick's wife Barbara, and my wife Sue. Sue's pin has been in her possession since."

Also included is a typed and signed LOA from Bean with essentially the same text as above.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
