Description

One of the rare "Treasure Silver" medals.

Apollo 12 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 69, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan L Bean, with Signed LOA. This 32mm silver medal was one of 262 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, with crewmembers Charles Conrad, Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean. The medals with serial numbers 1-82 were minted from an ingot of silver salvaged from a Spanish treasure ship and thus do not have the "sterling" hallmark. This makes them the second rarest variety of Apollo-flown silver Robbins medals (next to the Apollo 17). The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a clipper ship arriving at the moon (it was an all-Navy crew), trailing fire and flying the U.S. flag. There are four stars in the background, one each for the three astronauts who flew the mission and one for Clifton Williams who was killed on October 5, 1967, during a training flight. He had been assigned to the back-up crew for what would be the Apollo 9 mission and would have most likely been assigned as lunar module pilot for Apollo 12. The reverse has the dates of the mission along with the serial number and the Robbins hallmark. Here is a special piece of silver that once traveled from the "old" world to the "new" and much later, from the earth to the moon and back. Seldom-offered and a "must-have" for the discerning Robbins collector. It is mounted in a screw-top silver bezel attached to a 24" chain. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Authenticity from Bean on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that Apollo 12 Silver Robbins Medal, Serial Number 69, traveled with me aboard our Command Module 'Yankee Clipper' to the Moon on the mission of Apollo 12 in November 1969. This medal was returned to Earth and given to my sister-in-law Virtus Ragsdale. This medal is one of 82 that contains silver from the wreck of a Spanish vessel in the 1400s that was recovered off the coast of Florida."
