Flown medal struck from 1715 Spanish shipwreck silver.Apollo 12 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Pin with Diamond Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, Serial Number 56, with Signed LOA. This 32mm silver medal was one of 262 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, with crewmembers Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Alan Bean. It is one of only twenty-two of the silver medals set with a diamond at the lunar landing site and made into a pin. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a clipper ship arriving at the moon (it was an all-Navy crew), trailing fire and flying the U.S. flag. There are four stars in the background. The reverse has the dates of the mission along with the serial number. It does not have a sterling hallmark as the first eighty-two of these medals were struck from silver recovered from a 1715 Spanish treasure ship. Seldom offered in this form and particularly desirable being from a member of the crew. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.
Included with this lot is a 1999-dated handwritten and signed Letter of Authenticity on Alan Bean's letterhead stating, in full: "This letter is to certify that Robbins Silver Medallion, serial #56, is, I believe, one of 82 struck from an ingot of silver that was salvaged from The Plate Fleet, a Spanish treasure fleet that shipwrecked off the coast of Cape Canaveral in 1715. As I remember we commissioned the Robbins Company to convert 22 of the silver medallions into pins, each with a diamond added to the lunar landing site. We had these special diamond pins made for a few close friends and family members."
