Description

Apollo 12 Flown Map Plate from "CSM Orbital Photo Chart B" Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Richard Gordon, Signed and Certified, with Signed COA. A 10.5" x 7.25" printed B&W lunar map segment, signed in blue felt tip: "Flown to the Moon/ on/ Apollo XII/ Richard Gordon/ CMP/ Photo Tracks/ Lunar Far Side/ Revs 39-45". This was flown and used by Gordon in lunar orbit during the mission in November 1969. Gordon explains the purpose and source of these charts in the included COA (transcribed below). Small piece of tape on verso at top, very fine.

Included with this lot is a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Gordon on his personal letterhead. It reads, in full: "Map Plate from the Apollo 12 CSM Orbital Photo Chart "B". The section of lunar map that accompanies this letter is taken from the Apollo XII Command and Service Module Orbital Photo Chart "B". It shows late orbit ground tracks of revolutions 39, 42 and 45 over the surface of the moon. It also depicts related features such as Control Points, Ground Tracks, Initial Point, Landing Sites, Surveyor, Terminators, and much more. Compiled from nearly 4000 photographs taken from lunar orbit by the Ranger and the Lunar Orbiter, this map is one of only two that were used on the Apollo 12 mission. The Ranger and Lunar Orbiter programs were a series of unmanned space missions in the 1960s whose objective was to obtain close-up images of the lunar surface to create a comprehensive photo-map for use during the Apollo Moon landings by the crew as a guide for Lunar Navigation and to identify specific landmarks. I hereby declare that this map was flown and used by myself during the flight of Apollo 12 in Lunar Orbit." Also included is a COA from moonpans.com signed by Mike Constantine.
