Description

Apollo 12 Crew-Signed Insurance Covers (Two) Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, Certified and Signed. Two philatelic covers with 10ยข "First Man on the Moon" (Scott #C76) stamps affixed, each bearing a pictorial machine cancellation from Kennedy Space Center dated November 14, 1969, the day that Apollo 12 was launched. There are two different cachets, as follows.
Apollo Rockwell Cover: A color cachet with a non-official mission insignia showing a Yankee Clipper, the moon, the ocean, and three stars against a blue background. The crew's names and positions are printed below. Neatly signed in black felt tip in the address area: "Alan Bean", "Dick Gordon", and "Charles Conrad Jr".
Heritage Crafts Cover: The color cachet is titled "John F. Kennedy Space Center" and bears graphics of each astronaut, a lunar scene, and a Yankee Clipper above the text "Ocean of Storms". It has been boldly signed in black felt tip: "Charles Conrad Jr", "Dick Gordon", and "Alan L Bean". The stamp hides a small portion of the Conrad signature as often happened.
Both are signed on the verso: "Insurance Cover/ From my Collection/ Alan Bean/ Apollo 12 LMP". Starting with Apollo 11, the astronaut crews would all sign a certain quantity of these covers to be left on Earth as a contingency against their failing to return safely from the moon. In the case of a tragedy, the covers would be sold with the proceeds benefiting their families, not unlike an insurance policy. These are examples of rarely-seen cover types that were produced in small quantities. Excellent.
