Ex. Charles Conrad
Apollo 12 Command Module Flown Engraved Dessert Spoon Originally
from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Charles Conrad,
with Original Pouch. This 6.75" long Community Stainless spoon
is engraved on the handle: "CHARLES ‘PETE' CONRAD/ APOLLO 12 CDR"
to the right of an engraved NASA logo. On the back of the handle is
the "Community Stainless" mark and a piece of red Velcro. The clear
plastic snap-close pouch also has a piece of red Velcro. This color
is assigned to the commander and the Velcro makes it easy to hold
it in place on a spacecraft surface. Eating in space made a giant
leap forward during the Apollo era as they had the luxury of both
cold and hot water. The invention of a device called the
"spoon-bowl" allowed a more normal eating experience of rehydrated
food; a plastic zipper was opened and the food was removed with a
spoon. The moisture content in the food allowed it to cling to the
spoon. Apollo astronauts were thus the first to use eating utensils
such as this spoon in flight. A very important item for Conrad,
likely used every day during the trip to the moon and back.
Originally from the Richard Stonely collection but the provenance
documents were lost before it was sold at Regency/Superior a few
years ago. His Lunar Module Flown spoon is also in this auction. A
rare opportunity. Very fine. From the collection of Lee
