    Description

Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong's Personal U.S.S. Hornet Plaque Dated July 24, 1969, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty with Photo Certificate. A 10" x 10" x 0.5" felt-backed wooden plaque featuring a 6" square black on white tile with a pictorial history of ships named "Hornet" and the text: "A Heritage of Excellence/ USS Hornet CVS-12". Beneath is a brass plate engraved as follows: "Presented To/ Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong/ Command Pilot/ Apollo 11/ 24 July 1969". The Hornet was the recovery ship to which the Apollo 11 astronauts were taken on the above date while President Richard Nixon awaited their arrival. An absolutely incredible piece of Apollo 11 memorabilia. Very fine. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

We have just been informed that this plaque was actually presented to Neil Armstrong on July 25 when the Hornet held a "private" welcome ceremony, far away from the President's worldwide TV event the day before! Captain Carl Seiberlich was the master-of-ceremonies with VADM Don Davis in attendance. There was also a re-enlistment ceremony for a few sailors, presided over by Buzz from inside the MQF. Included with this lot will be four snapshot-size reprint photos of this presentation ceremony that pictures the crew's plaques.
