Apollo 11 Mission Insignia Artwork Print Signed by Artist James Cooper, in Framed Display. An impressive 19.5" x 18" (sight size) photographic print of the original artwork for the iconic Eagle-landing insignia, double matted and framed to an overall 25.5" x 24". Astronaut Michael Collins conceived the original idea for the design of his mission's insignia. NASA artist James R. Cooper worked closely with him to create the actual artwork, from the original design with the eagle carrying an olive branch in its mouth to the official NASA-approved version with the olive branch, representing peace, moved to the claws. In September 1969, the Apollo 11 crew autographed Cooper's original painting and presented it back to him, an unusual gesture. This print was made from that artwork and the artist has signed it in black ink: "Jim Cooper". This is not one of the mass-produced, numbered versions of 350 or 2000, but a much more desirable small edition sold by the artist. Included is the original printed letter included with the purchase of this print from Cooper and a copy of an article discussing how Cooper should have been given at least partial credit of the design of the Eisenhower half-dollar reverse rather than Frank Gasparro. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
