Description
Apollo 11 Lunar Module Flown Section of the Wright Flyer's Wing Fabric, Position #68, Flown as Part of the First Successful Powered Controlled Flight in History at Kitty Hawk in 1903 as well as the First Manned Lunar Landing in 1969, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. A 1.25" square cut segment of muslin cloth from the left wing of the Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer. In a signed letter dated January 26, 1970 (and currently in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum), Neil Armstrong stated the following: "I certify that the wooden and fabric materials provided by the Air Force Museum were placed aboard Apollo XI and carried to the surface of the moon by the lunar module 'Eagle' on mankind's first lunar landing, July 20, 1969."Armstrong was allowed to retain a portion of the cloth and propeller pieces for his own personal collection. This segment was carefully excised from his own section of the wing cloth, certified, and encapsulated that it was flown twice, December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk (North Carolina) and July 20, 1969, at Tranquility Base (the name of the lunar landing site of Apollo 11). It's hard to imagine a more significant historical relic being made available to the public. An amazing opportunity. Cloth is quite clean. Sealed in a numbered archival holder, CAG 1000098-065. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
