Description

"Enclosed are your two crosses which landed on the moon 20 July 1969."

Apollo 11 Lunar Module Flown 14K Gold Ankh Cross with Original Handwritten Note of Provenance from Buzz Aldrin. A 2" x 0.625" white gold ankh, marked "14K" on the back and with a suspension loop at top. This, along with the items in the following two lots, was flown to the moon by Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11 as a favor for a neighbor and close friend. He later returned them taped to the inside of a 5.25" x 4.125" Apollo 11 foldover notecard with the following handwritten note: "Dear Marty. Enclosed are your two crosses which landed on the moon 20 July 1969. Thanks for your felt but unseen help on our mission. May the Creator be with you on your travels in search of happiness. As ever. Buzz. P.S. The Flag went also." The outlines of the ankhs are visible on the note. The astronauts were allowed to carry certain personal items (many times as a favor for friends) in their Personal Preference Kit (PPK) on the missions. According to the note, the original of which accompanies this lot, this ankh went all the way to the lunar surface. LM-flown relics from Apollo 11 are considered the pinnacle of flown space collectibles. Ankh excellent, letter good.

The ankh is an Egyptian hieroglyphic character- the symbol for life. It is also called the "breath of life," "key of the Nile," or "crux ansata" (handled cross). It is frequently found in Egyptian tomb paintings and other art and was widely adapted as a symbol for eternal life during the New Age movement in the 1960s.
